Porac Medical Mission

To kick off our 5th year, the 2000 Project headed to Babo Pangulo, Porac, Pampanga. With the help of our amazing coordinator, Ma’am Weng Lansangan, at the San Isidro Labrador center, our volunteers set up shop to provide medical, diabetes, and eyeglass screenings for the residents of Porac. A big shout out to the volunteers of Generika, Dr. Jan Zapanta, Dr. Ferdinand Pabustan, and Dr. Henry Yambao for their medical expertise.

Paykek Elementary School - Kapangan, Benguet

The first stop on our backpack journey took us to Kapangan, Benguet. In the hills of Kapangan was the Paykek Elementary School where a Elizabeth’s best friend, Marilyn, attended school. Marilyn’s mother, Mrs. Segundo, was the 3rd grade teacher at this school and lived right next to the school property. It has been about 30 years since Elizabeth has been to this school, so it was a great feeling to return and give back to a school so close to her heart.

Deccan Elementary School - Buguias, Benguet

A special thank you to Mayor Ruben L. Tinda-an of Buguias for his support on our mission. Without his help and his experienced drivers, we could have never made it to Deccan and Telitel. The roads to these schools were rough and required special off-roading vehicles. Many of the pathways were single lane, unpaved, and slippery from the rain. Just the ride there took over 2 hour! Throughout the ride, we often joked we were getting free back massages from how bumpy it was :D. We were all thankful for the experience and loved to see how the Mayor was so close to the people in his municipality.

Telitel Elementary School - Buguias, Benguet

As we approached Telitel Elementary School, many of the students started running away as soon as they saw our vehicles! In our confusion, we thought they would be excited. However, according to Mayor Ruben, the students were scared because they saw the special MDRRMC disaster vehicles. The kids thought were coming to give their annual shots! After much convincing (and bribing with some candy) we got them to come back and receiver their treats.

Asipulo Central School - Amduntog

Asipulo was a very special distribution site. Before we started our journey, we were not sure if Asipulo was possible due to the rough terrain to get there and the obstacles the students/teachers had to face to arrive there. The original plan was to have students from 23 surrounding schools to come to one central location. However, we learned that from some of the schools, it took 50$ one way! Because of this, we instead had representatives (school principles) come in the students stead to receive the backpacks and school supplies. Overall, it was a huge success and we are still receiving pictures from the schools in those remote locations.

As a special thank you to some of our hardest working volunteers, Gaella, Jhadel, and Joshua, we gave their classrooms school supplies, toothbrushes and Jollibee meals. Gaella and Jhadel have been a part of the 2000 project since the beginning and have spent countless nights packing candies and school supplies for our distributions. Joshua is one of our newest additions but he adds so much too our team. He is also an excellent dancer!
